The purpose of this activity was to connect those present with each other but also those present with those across borders. The Yarn activity served as a way for the learners to share parts of themselves while creating a stronger bond with each other. In this activity, students were able to have their voices heard among friends but also to people of a different community.
For the Yarn activity, learners were asked to take a few minutes and think about what they would want to tell a young person living in Providence or in Nicaragua. Then, students wrote down their thoughts and prepared to read them out loud to the group. Sitting in a circle, each student read aloud their statement when they received the ball of the yarn. Every learner held onto their piece of yarn so that at the end, a web had been created, symbolizing a connection that exists between us all.
By the end of this activity, we were able to hear the dreams and thoughts of all the learners. We understood what was truly important to them and why they wanted to share what they did. Once the activity was completed, students saw that we were both physically connected by the yarn and also through our experiences and dreams. This created a really strong bond between the students, as they exhibited a strong sense of pride for each other and as as group sharing in their community. There was an evident connectedness between all of those involved.
