The River of Life is a visual narrative method that is used as a way for people to share their stories of the past, present, and future. We wanted to use the River of Life activity as a way to get to know one another, expressing who we are, where we come from, and our hopes and dreams for the future.
Both learners and facilitators were challenged to think of the river as a metaphor and draw their story as a river containing different elements of a river's ecosystem. "As with a river, your life has a certain flow. There are times when a river is rushing and flowing over the banks and times when the river goes over the rapids and the rocks. At other times, the river moves slowly within its banks towards the destination." The beginning was to represent where one came from, the middle was to represent where one is currently, and the end was to represent what ones thinks the futures holds.
After everyone was done, we all went around and shared our rivers. I believe that this activity helped everyone connect right off the bat. We found a common ground that everyone their own story of where they came from and as we grow we continue to develop our aspirations.
