“Who am I?”
Here is a question that every person will ask him or herself throughout life. How do we discover, define, and express who we are as individuals? We can begin to answer this dynamic question and define our self-identity through exploring likes, dislikes, values, beliefs, cultures, activities, hobbies, hopes and dreams.
Defining our values, or figuring out what is most important to us in life, can give us an understanding about who we are and who we want to be. What is most important to you? What do you value most in life?
During our first day of workshops with the students, both in Nicaragua and in Providence, we asked this question in hopes of provoking thoughts involving each students values, life course, and personal goals or dreams for their future. The result? Incredible stories of self filled with passions, values, and hopes for the future were expressed. We accomplished this through two main activities, the River of Life and Self-Portrait creation, and corresponding conversations. Especially in the community of El Manzano Uno, the youth expressed their love for family, friends, and their native country. The students of CityArts in Providence had similar responses and expressed their love of family, friends, the CityArts community and the Providence community.
One major value the students of El Manzano Uno, Nicaragua was the pride they held for their country. They all shared a beautiful love for their country and taught us the words to this song that embodies the beautiful Nicaragua.

Nicaragua Mia
Miguel Aceves Mejia
hermosa y valiente
esa es mi nación!
soy puro pinolero,
nicaragüense por gracia de Dios.
Soy...
La raza nicaragüense
sabe de luchas y de honor,
y luce altiva en su frente
los esplendores de su sol.
Sólo en Darío se explica
la inmensidad de su creación,
tenía que ser unica
del mundo entero admiración.
¡Qué linda, linda es Nicaragua…
...
Soy puro pinolero…
Bella y valiente de veras
es la mujer que aquí nació,
igual a Rafaela Herrera
que a los piratas derrotó.
Con un mantón de acuarelas,
con los paisajes de un tapiz,
con noches de lentejuelas,
así se viste mi país.
¡Qué linda, linda es Nicaragua…
..
Soy...
