Traveling to a new country, you have to embrace the unknown. It can be an entirely different way of life and culture, and sometimes it is definitely intimidating. You have no idea what to expect, but you hope that when you arrive at your destination, everything falls into place, and that was absolutely the case in regards to our trips to El Manzano Uno, Nicaragua. Upon our arrival and the commencement of our workshops with the learners of El Manzano Uno, we immediately were touched by the experiences and personalities of the learners there. They were so willing to open up to us and welcome us into their community. We may have planned to conduct certain workshops and we hoped to have certain goals, but throughout our week there, the learners took the reins into their own hands and the result was something we could have never expected or planned for. The learners took it upon themselves to show us and tell us of aspects of their lives that we would never have found out through our workshops. We saw beautiful landscapes, met inspirational people, and felt heartwarming connections, and to say it was life-changing would be an understatement. We discovered a new way of life, and how people are similar, but different in so many ways. But, the most important message that many of us took home was that there is beauty and truth in the variance of our world, and it should be celebrated; discovery of others and their ways of life encourages our uniqueness yet connects us through our common values and experiences.
